Inflammation is at the core of most horse related lameness and health conditions. The cellular process is present, contributing to a high level of dysfunction and even degeneration, but we are often left with the ultimate question as to how to aid the situation. Many current therapies target the inflammatory process, helping to balance it, but more times than not, we are left seeking, as a horse owner, veterinarian, and farrier. What more can be done to help the horse and to further promote balance in that inflammatory process, while also keeping cost under control? Curcumin and Turmeric extracts could prove to provide real solutions!
At Nouvelle Research, our line of Cur-OST® Equine formulas are directed at supporting and promoting a healthy inflammatory response in the horse impacted by a variety of conditions. This has been our goal and something we strive to achieve, but not every horse is the same. The process of inflammation is out of balance in each of those equine patients, but the precise means of management for each can be simplistic or complex.
An imbalanced inflammatory response is tied closely into:
- Joint related conditions
- Back pain and discomfort
- Muscle aches and cramps
- Poor circulation
- Foot related discomfort
- Digestive concerns
- Neurological concerns
- Stamina, performance, and recovery concerns
There are many factors that are linked back into this inflammatory imbalance that is present and can include foot health and balance, digestive health, the diet, internal and external stressors, saddle fit, and other factors. Taking into consideration these numerous factors, the ideal approach in balancing that inflammatory process would be to correct as many factors as possible, which can be complex when it comes to supplementation.
Given the complexity that is present, it is nice in many cases to have a base formula to aid in promoting a healthier inflammatory response in the horse. This can allow the regimen to be simplistic, but also allow for usage of other targeted formulas to work synergistically to improve the outcome, while not creating financial strains for the owner.
This is a common approach used in our equine rehabilitation facility, taking a simplistic approach in the early stages, to assess how the patient is responding and then determine future needs.
Cur-OST® EQ Inflammend targets a balanced inflammatory response
- Turmeric Oleoresin Extract (14% curcuminoids, 25% volatile oils)
- Curcumin 95% extract
- Resveratrol 98% extract
Curcumin extracts are well known in research for their ability to modulate the inflammatory process and are a central part of most of our Cur-OST® Equine formulas. However, Curcumin is just one of many ‘active’ phytochemicals present within the Turmeric root. Most of these other actives are disregarded, but research is proving them to be very effective and synergistic. The problem with dosing pure Turmeric root extract is the shear volume that is needed in many critical care type of cases. The volume is prohibitive and cost becomes a factor.
Cur-OST® EQ Inflammend harnesses the power of Turmeric through the inclusion of a Oleoresin extract, which provides 14% curcuminoids and 25% volatile oils. This allows us to take advantage of the remaining phytochemicals present within Turmeric to synergistically work with Curcumin 95% and Resveratrol 98% extract.
The three components work together to boost the impact to the horse and aid in balancing the inflammatory response. In a low dose and cost effective base formula!
Through the use of Cur-OST® EQ Inflammend, it is possible to simplify the approach to balancing inflammation in a variety of conditions, while allowing for the addition of other formulas to further support recovery in the horse.
