Can Curcumin or Turmeric Help Your Horse?

Turmeric and curcumin.  Both well known names in the world of herbs and alternative medicine, even in the horse industry.  Despite being well known, many do not trust or believe this herb can be of any value in helping their horse. The reason for this disbelief is two-fold, stemming from misinformation or a lack of true desire to investigate the herb and acquire an understanding.  When used properly in the horse, both curcumin and turmeric can be of real value, but again, there must be a certain level of understanding in its proper usage. Creating Real Change in the Metabolic Horse

The easy-keeper and metabolic horse pose many challenges to horse owners, farriers, and veterinarians in many facets of equine health and soundness.  For some owners, they are contending with weight issues, insulin resistance, laminitis, and other health concerns in their horse.  For many others, these primary issues are not the problem, but more so it is allergies, ongoing colic concerns, irritable bowel issues, hindgut acidosis, and non-healing injuries or foot problems.  While this second group doesn’t realize it, all of those issues stem from underlying weight issues, metabolic concerns, and often poor digestive health balance.  Let’s look at some new options to assist these horses. The Horse’s Joint and Soundness; Taking Action to Prevent Problems

The horse’s joint is the second most common site of lameness in the horse, after the foot or hoof.  As owners, you often spend a great deal of time at the veterinarian either having a joint lameness diagnosed or managed with various injections or other therapies.  Considering the importance of all the joints in your horse’s body, and how much money is often spent trying to keep them from breaking down, it just makes sense to come at the problem from a preventative point of view.  If you can do this successfully, the approach may reduce the increased wear, tear, cartilage loss, and bone remodeling that comes over time due to the stresses of life, conformation, and competition.  Once that damage begins, with evident bone remodeling and cartilage loss, you often find yourself chasing your own tail.  Promote joint and bone health from the onset, and in the long-term, the benefits can be real and often, dramatic. Turmeric Oils and Horse Health

The majority of today’s research and common knowledge about turmeric and health are linked back to curcumin.  Although curcumin is one of the active ingredients in turmeric, it is not the only one.  Turmeric essential or volatile oils are a less commonly known source of health benefits that are often excluded or overlooked, and likewise not taken advantage of in horse health.  Many horses have benefited from the daily use of curcumin, due to known abilities to promote a healthy inflammatory process, but could turmeric oils add even more to the equation.  Is there more to these oils that we do not know?  Could a combination of curcumin and turmeric oils impact your horse’s health on a higher level? Navicular Disease, Curcumin, and Bisphosphonates in the Horse

Navicular disease in the horse is a common lameness condition impacting equine athletes of all disciplines, but with varying degrees.  The condition results in ongoing heel pain associated with soft tissue damage and navicular bone remodeling, which occurs progressively over time.  The horses impacted by navicular disease suffer variable degrees of pain and have a shorted forward phase of their stride, which inevitably impacts performance and comfort.  Current therapies are limited and most of those therapies are directed towards alleviation of clinical signs, more so than altering the condition itself.  Could an herb like Curcumin, or Turmeric, impact navicular disease in the horse and potentially improve bone health alone or with bisphosphonates? What is the Best Joint Supplement for My Dog?

What is the best joint supplement for my dog?  That is a very common question that I would entertain from my veterinary clients over the years.  When it comes to a joint supplement, you need to look at the purpose or goals for the product and the ingredients.  Glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate are very common ingredients for canine joint support.  However, is it possible to do better?  Can you provide joint support for your dog, but also joint pain relief and inflammation support at the same time?  Can you do better than the typical glucosamine based joint supplement for dogs?  It depends on your goals.

Understanding Curcumin and Impact for Your Horse

Turmeric and curcumin are two popular terms when it comes to herbs and health in the horse, which are really almost one in the same.  We may know about the health benefits noted in research, focusing on inflammation reduction, and have heard on the news or in social media outlets, but do we truly understand what all of that means?  Should we use these herbs and if so, in what form or even combinations?  Is there a difference between the different types and how can using them benefit my horse? Gas, bloating and GI upset in Dogs

Gas, bloating, diarrhea, vomiting and gastrointestinal upset in dogs is a problem.  Our canine companions are no different than you or I.  We all have a gastrointestinal tract that sometimes can get out of whack, not functioning at desired levels, resulting in problems at times.  It can be difficult to contend with, especially in the middle of the night or if your pet is left unattended while you work, coming home to a mess.  Why does this happen and is there something we can do or not do to improve the situation?
