Cur-OST EQ Total Support; A Powerful Equine Herb Supplement

It is true that no two horses are completely alike in their personality, body composition, performance, and overall health.  Given this variance between horses it can be a challenge at times when it comes to supplements, especially herbal supplements.  However, if we break that group of horses down into two distinct groups, the choices for herbal formulas becomes a little easier.  This is where the Cur-OST EQ Total Support formula for horses begins to demonstrate its incredible benefits for one distinct group.

If we break the horse community down into two body types, things start to become a little easier when it comes to choosing an herbal formula to assist them with health and lameness conditions.  For sake of keeping things simple, let’s say we have leaner or harder-keeper horses and then we have heavier or more easy-keeper types.  These body types can be elaborated upon for more depth of knowledge, but for now, we will keep it simple.  If you wish to learn more about body types, I recommend our herbal book, “Herbs and Whole Foods“.  For now, let’s just focus on the heavier horse.

The heavier breeds of horses include the Paint, Quarter Horse, Appaloosa, draft or working breeds, and warmbloods for the most part.  These horses have heavier builds, more body mass, heavier bone structure, and usually are prone to gaining weight easily if allowed.  These are the Kapha dosha mixes out there or the endomorph body type.  They are special as due to this body type, they are prone to slower metabolisms, slower digestive rates, less caloric expenditure or burning, and higher levels of inflammatory problems.  Thus, most horses with chronic laminitis, metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance, allergies, Cushing’s disease, and even infectious conditions like EPM and Lyme, are the heavier breeds.

One can try to supplement their way out of these medical problems in this type of horse by using vitamin-mineral blends or other synthetic based formulas, but more times than not, they fail to make improvement.  Then many will try to use herbs, usually individual herbs, because they have read that the herbs are beneficial or maybe they impact inflammation or insulin function.  Again, some horses may respond, but many fail to make improvement.

In this group of horses, no matter the problem mentioned above, there are three main goals in restoring or regaining their health.

  1. Manage chronic inflammation and remove ‘heat’ or toxins
  2. Support and enhance digestive health, including managing ‘dampness
  3. Provide a high level of whole-food nutrition

These three conditions or factors need to be addressed together.  If you just address them alone, more times than not, you will fail to improve the condition.  Sometimes, you will make matters worse.

The Cur-OST EQ Total Support formula is an extremely popular and effective herbal formula for horses, especially if they are in this heavier or easy-keeper group.   The reason for this effectiveness, when dosed properly, is due to the fact that this herbal blend targets all three goals.

Let’s go through the ingredients and their actions for the heavier horse:

  1. Curcumin, Boswellia, and Turmeric:  Help to combat inflammation, encourage digestive health and healing, and improve blood circulation
  2. Alfalfa and Spirulina:  Major sources of natural nutrients, protein, and antioxidants to support cellular health, cellular repair, and tissue regeneration
  3. Astaxanthin, Ascorbic Acid and Tocopherols:  Primary antioxidant support for cellular health and inflammation
  4. Mushroom Blend:  Digestive, dampness, and immune support to curb inflammation
  5. Anise:  Digestive support and helps to remove dampness in the body
  6. Dandelion:  Digestive support, curbs inflammation, major detoxifier, helps to remove dampness from the body and reduces excessive ‘heat’ buildup
  7. Parsley:  Digestive support, controls dampness, provides whole-food nutrition
  8. Marshmallow Root:  Digestive support, help to remove dampness, moistens the body and benefits cellular healing.

From a TCM point of view, the Cur-OST EQ Total Support helps to ‘move’ energy or Qi, aiding to improve stagnation.  This is how it benefits inflammation and blood flow in the body and aids tension.  Additionally, many of the herbs benefit the ‘spleen’ or digestion as well as the ‘liver’ organ, helping to ease tension in the liver, relieve tension from the digestive system, clear toxins and heat, while improving the microbiome balance.  Finally, the formula helps to build ‘blood’ and ‘yin’ to a lower degree through whole food nutrition, which aids every cell in the body.

In many cases of metabolic ailments, insulin resistance, Cushing’s disease, allergies and even conditions of lameness like hoof problems and laminitis, the Cur-OST EQ Total Support is the first line of attack and if dosed properly, many horses make dramatic improvements in the first 1-2 months of usage.  The one caveat to any herbal approach, however, is that the offending supplements being given to the horse currently are removed, as are all grains.  This is all a part of ‘seeing’ the bigger problem and why events are occurring.

Most cases will benefit just from the Cur-OST EQ Total Support.  If there are more obvious digestive problems, such as loose stools, I will recommend adding the Cur-OST EQ Tri-GUT for added digestive support.  In cases of PPID or Cushing’s disease, I will recommend adding the Cur-OST EQ Adapt & Calm formula for support of the adrenal axis.  These are all recommendations as starting points.

Cur-OST EQ Total Support is a very effective formula for the heavier and easier-keeper type of horse and a formula that we have a hard time keeping in stock at times.  I would stress caution in using this formula in any leaner horse breed, mainly because this formula is somewhat ‘draining’ on the body and can deplete the Yin aspect of their overall being.  The heavier horse benefits from this aspect, while in the leaner horse, you could induce unwanted weight loss and excessive cooling.

  1. This article is so helpful, thank you! I use this supplement for my Easy-Keeper Quarter Horse. Now I can appreciate all the good it’s doing him.

  2. Im debating on trying this. She is a tennesee walker but a very easy keeper and I have a hard time keeping her weight normal. No grain a few timothy pellets, ration balancer and omega e.

  3. If you use this and you see an improvement after a few months.. do you continue to use it? That’s the part I’m the most confused about. If the IR or cushings improves, then it seems like what i keep reading is that good quality hay and alfalfa pellets are all they should need. It isn’t that easy to find balanced hay every season. I live in a cold climate, I’m lucky to get one good crop per year.

    1. Hi. Yes, in most cases the supplement is used for the long-term, often for years, sometimes at a reduced dosage. Why? Because simply, it has taken years to get to this point of health problems in the horse and it will take a while to ‘reverse’ the condition, if that is possible. Also, there are many other factors at play from diet to lifestyle, feet, stress, etc, that add into the equation. Thus, it is truly rare to alter all of those variables and daily supplementation to counter those effects is often required. Thank you.

      1. , you said that if horses are improving, they can be fed a “reduced dosage”. What is the reduced dosage amount?
        Thank you

  4. I am currently using this supplement. Directions say 2 scoops twice daily for 24 days, then 2 scoops once daily afyer that. My question is – will it still be as effective if I feed once scoop twice daily?

    1. Hi. No, the splitting of the dose will result in lower than ideal blood levels of the herbs and thus, reduced efficacy. The label for the EQ Total Support states ‘2 scoops together’ either in the AM or the PM. This is a common problem for some reason and splitting of the doses will result often in a loss of improvement in the horse. I hope this helps.

  5. My horse is on her 3rd bag of CurOst Total EQ, her ACTH number is 102. Can I feed this suplement along with the Cushings supplement from Second Vet?

    1. Hi. The reduced dose would be a reduction in the full dose. That amount can vary from 1/2 that full dose to 3/4 the full dose but again, is highly dependent upon the horse and other factors involved with the case. This is not a true statement for all horses.

  6. My 13 yr QH gelding has been battling urticaria since last summer. I read your article on alfalfa and switched him to alfalfa and alfalfa pellets 2 weeks ago. I recently began your Pro- Gut formula not knowing about the Cur-OST EQ Total Support and its benefits for hives. Would it be safe to start this formula as well? Thank you

  7. I would like to purchase several bags of the Curost EQ total Support supplement at one time, and am wondering if I stored the bags in the fridge or freezer, if that would work to retain efficacy as I use them up.

    1. Hi. We do not recommend buying any of the herbal formulas in mass quantity as the herbs are very susceptible to heat, cold, humidity, and dryness. Freezing could reduce the effectiveness of the herbs. A few pouches at a time are fine and kept in a room where temperature and humidity are controlled and the unused pouches are kept closed. Thank you.

  8. Hi,
My mini has cushings and is a senior horse. He’s been having a hard time keeping weight on, while generally he is an easy keeper though. It seems that due to his age and only having been on the prascend for about a month that those are contributing to the weight loss. I see the note about not adding this to leaner horses. Would it still be okay to give this to him knowing he can be an easy keeper but waiting for prascend to kick in and there’s age related weight?

  9. Hi Dr Schell, going to start on EQ Total Support and EQ Adapt & Calm for 1200lb., 21 yr old qtr horse with ACTH at 52 (it was 9 one yr ago). He is still shedding well, although, he has long grandpa chin hair, some on lower shoulders and long hair on legs Do I really need to take him off all current supplements? Which are:
    – 2oz. 2x/day of Cool Stance dried coconut meat https://stanceequineusa.com/product/cool-stance-retail/
    – 1.5oz. 2x/day of Highpoint grass minerals https://horsetech.com/high-point-grass
    – 1/4 cup 2x/day of chia seeds (with fennel, rosehips, dandelion, stinging nettle) https://www.twentyfourc.com/product-page/inner-glow-booster
    – 1/4 cups 2x/day of ground flax https://horsetech.com/nutraflax
He is fed ~4.5 lbs per day, each of Bermuda, Alfalfa and Orchard
    Thank you!
    -Andrea
