What is the difference between Cur-OST® and my joint supplement?
Cur-OST® formulas are designed to reduce inflammation through the use of Curcumin and other anti-inflammatory herbs. Inflammation is an ongoing problem associated with not only joint deterioration but also many other health conditions. Most joint supplements contain glucosamine & chondroitin, which mainly target cartilage repair by providing nutrients lost as a result of chronic inflammation.
They do provide a small amount of inflammation protection, but Curcumin is much stronger in it action and ability to reduce pain and inflammation.
If you manage the inflammation and provide proper antioxidant therapy, often we find that glucosamine type supplements are not needed. That being said, those same supplements are perfectly safe to use with our Cur-OST® formulas and may provide some additional benefits.
What is Inflammation and how does it impact my horse?
The inflammatory response is constantly present in all of us, including horses, and is responsible for healing and immune function in acute cases. The problem comes when the ‘acute’ inflammatory response continues to be present, which can be triggered by many events including stress, aging, diet, competition and training. When the inflammatory response is constantly activated, it can contribute to increased tissue destruction, cellular changes, metabolic problems, immune dysfunction, joint deterioration, tendon injuries and overall pain for the horse. The inflammatory response is important for overall health and MUST be present, but it also must be controlled in order to minimize damage to the body.
Why Use Curcumin?
Curcumin is one of the most heavily researched herbs for reduction of inflammation. One of the biggest reasons is that Curcumin impacts the inflammation process on multiple levels instead of just one or two, like most pain medications. Curcumin inhibits negative cellular pathways, acts as an antioxidant and restores function to the entire body. Curcumin has also been shown to demonstrate very potent anti-cancer properties, likely through the reduction of inflammation. Curcumin has been used for years in Ayurvedic medical cultures for overall health promotion and disease management capabilities. It provides us with a new approach to managing inflammation, pain in our horses.
What is the difference between Turmeric and Curcumin?
Curcumin is the active phytochemical in Turmeric (Curcumin longa). The root of the Turmeric plant is the main plant component utilized and contains many beneficial ingredients with medicinal value, but Curcumin is by far the most active. Most supplements utilize Turmeric, but Turmeric only contains 2-4% Curcumin on average and honestly, Curcumin is what we are looking for to benefit health. By using Curcumin, instead of Turmeric, we can reduce our daily dosage and in most cases, obtain much higher health benefits. There has been much discussion about the absorption and bioavailability of Curcumin in human studies, but our research has not shown this to be an issue. We utilize a patented Curcumin product called BCM-95®, which combines the 95% Curcumin extract with volatile oils from the Turmeric root and based on research studies, this enhances absorption by up to 7x! BCM-95® Curcumin has also been shown to be more potent than Curcumin with added bioperine, demonstrating higher and more sustained blood levels. Curcumin is fat soluble, so the addition of these natural oils makes sense and simply works better than traditional Curcumin or Turmeric blends.
Do I need to continue my other supplements when using Cur-OST® formulas?
Our Cur-OST® are designed to provide everything your horse needs through the provision of nutrients naturally. In many cases, some of our equine formulas contain Spirulina blue green algae, concentrated Alfalfa or even Pea Protein. These plants are very high in many vitamins, minerals and protein, essentially providing what your horse needs to maintain overall health, support hooves, skin, hair and muscle/tendon support. Many supplements provide vitamins/minerals in their synthetic form, which can be hard to digest and assimilate. The body was designed to assimilate nutrients in their natural form, which is what we provide in our formulas. In the case of the typical horse joint supplement, the main ingredients utilized are glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM, which are fine but only provide what is being lost as a result of ongoing inflammation. If you combat the inflammation effectively and provide nutrients to cellular health, we find that these supplements are no longer needed, which saves you money and provides better results for your horse!
Why are Cur-OST® formulas so expensive?
Our Cur-OST® formulas provide potent levels of herbs and nutrients that often mimick levels found in human and animal reserach studies, to produce results clinically for your horse. After all, that is what you are looking for and we understand this. Cur-OST® formulas are the only supplements on the market using potent levels of patented BCM-95® curcumin in combination with other critical anti-inflammatory herbs. We don’t just want to provide a product with trace or non-functional levels of a particular ingredient, but we want to provide levels that actually make a difference for your horse. Health is expensive, but we find that with continued use of Cur-OST® formulas, many other traditional supplements can be discontinued, which saves you money in the long run and actually yields better results clinically. The goal with equine recovery is to find the formula or combination that helps to produce results, then over the next 6 months, try to reduce the dosage needed or move down to a lesser strength formula that provides similar results. Often we find that down grading formulas is possible once the initial health problem is under control, which again helps to save you money. If we can restore health on many levels, then the overall cost to you as an owner is reduced as hopefully your horse is healthier, stronger and sounder, which requires less visits from the doctor! That is our goal…to restore health!

Do most animals readily accept Cur-OST® products?
Animals are individuals and given this, some are accepting to supplements added to their food source and some are not. Approximately 10% of trial patients were skeptical to the products and resented their flavoring, however this seemed to change over time with an evident increased acceptance. It is to be noted that Cur-OST® has a distinct orange-yellow color to the mixture and can stain the handlers skin surface as well as the muzzle of the horse after ingestion. It is to be noted that Cur-OST® contains curcumin, which has a distinct yellow color, which can stain the hand, muzzles of the animals as well as other surfaces. The EQ Green product does contain a base of spirulina blue green algae, which does have a distinct flavor and aroma, which may not be suiting to all horses, but is generally accepted by over 90% of patients. The EQ PLUS products do not contain the spirulina and are more easily tolerated to the average horse. Both products do contain a light banana flavor which improves palatability for horses. The EQ IR and EQ IMMUNE products are all naturally flavored and both readily accepted by most horses.
Can I compete my horse while using Cur-OST® products?
Our Cur-OST® equine formulas do not contain any substances on the banned FEI or USEF list. All ingredients in the products are listed accordingly on our labels. Nothing more and nothing less. Please consult the rule book of your show organization for specifics on illegal substances.
Is Cur-OST® safe to administer to pregnant animals?
Cur-OST® contains curcumin, which has been show in some research studies to potentially induce premature uterine contractions which could result in early delivery or abortion. At this time we do not recommend its use in animals that might be pregnant.
Why are my hands and buckets stained yellow after use of the products?
Curcumin is a very bright yellow herb and used in the dye industry. Given this, there is a high incidence of staining when utilizing our curcumin based supplements. The staining potential increases as you move up to stronger formulas that contain more curcumin. In most cases, soap and water will clean up the staining, but you may also wear gloves if desired. There are no health implications as a result of the staining or contact with curcumin.
Why are your supplements not in pellets?
Herbs are very delicate and susceptible to heat and moisture. In order to create a pellet or tablet form, heat as well as various binders are needed in the process. The heat can potentially inactivate many of the nutrients found in the herbs and the binders are an unneeded additive to the diet. Powder form is the best form for preservation of nutrients.
