Sports related injuries are common in equine competitions and training.  They are expected to occur and are likely, due to the extreme stress placed upon joints and other supporting structures, often exceeding normal limitations.  The injuries can be a short term nuisance or many prove to be long term, career ending problems that drag on for years.  How we approach these injuries from both a preventative and therapeutic perspective can dictate the outcome and often improve our odds of success.  In order to understand the options before us, we have to understand what is taking place within that animal.

Equine Allergies – Understanding & Providing Solutions

Itching, scratching, coughing, red eyes, hair loss and oozing skin bumps….all related to allergic conditions in the horse and a common occurrence. Current approaches to therapy are often complex and unrewarding, leading to the allergic condition often becoming worse with every passing year, fluctuating from season to season.  All of these clinical signs are evidence of a deeper seated problem in the patient, and through a better understanding, we can take a different approach which often yields better management. As with most issues though, in regards to chronic disease, we have to see the root, the cause, and not so much focus on the clinical signs that are present.

Ears & Rears; Allergy Problems in Pets

“Ears and Rears”, a common entry made by our technician or receptionist into the patient file pertaining to purpose of visit for that day.  In many cases, the problems came in two’s, implying pet problems with both ears and rear end, but in other times, we had a problem in just one of the two areas.  Ear and anal gland problems are very common in companion animal veterinary practice, each having their own distinct underlying causes and frustrations.  Although there is no remedy or ‘cure all’ that will totally eliminate these complaints, with more understanding, we can implement changes and even dietary or supplement regimens to produce easier management.

Equine Stamina & Recovery; Influence of Two Key Herbs

Performance, stamina, recovery and overall health are tied in together.  For centuries, various “tonic” herbs have been utilized in Chinese and Ayurvedic medical cultures, to help rebuild and promote vitality in the body, especially post illness or in cases of mental or physical exhaustion. Two key herbs stand out regarding their known ability to ‘revive’ or reenergize the body: Cordyceps sinensis and Astragalus membranaceus. In a search on Pubmed.gov, there are 853 cited papers on Astragalus membranaceus and 1118 on Cordyceps sinensis.  This give us an idea of the vast amount of research conducted and the potential applications towards health restoration.
